Grand Cayman's Seaman's Monument is located directly on the waterfront near Fort Street, in George Town. The Seaman’s Monument and what little remains of Fort George both provide fine photographic opportunities into Grand Cayman's sea heritage past. Touring Georgetown and George Town sightseeing are tours that you can easily do yourself—even without a vehicle, if you are staying in the Seven Mile Beach area. A taxi ride into George Town to tour around on your own will cost far less than any guided tour of George Town, while providing the freedom of visiting the Georgetown sites and attractions you prefer at your own pace. The sightseeing and shopping area of George Town is less than two square miles so walking is obviously the most practical and cost effective manner of touring George Town.

Fort George was constructed in 1790 to defend against French and Spanish marauders. The original cannons remain in tact, which is quite an accomplishment to their construction given the many storms, hurricanes and nor 'westers that have wreaked their havoc over the centuries.

Grand Cayman's National Museum in George Town displays a broad array of artifacts; indeed, the building itself is an artifact as it is the oldest standing building in George Town.

George Town Harbor or 'harbour' is where the cruise ship terminals are located and where all cruise ship passengers debark, unless there is a nor'wester creating rough seas in the George Town harbour area, in which case the ships disembark in Sparks, near Caybrew Brewery.

George Town serves as Grand Cayman's primary cruise ship port, bringing anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 cruise ship passengers per day, four to five days per week.

The first permanent inhabitant on record in the Cayman Islands—Isaac Bodden was born in George Town in Grand Cayman in 1661. After the taking of Jamaica in 1655, Many of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers migrated to the Cayman Islands and made George Town the first part of Grand Cayman to become populated.

The overwhelming majority of cruise passengers do not research George Town tours or excursions or any part of the Cayman Islands prior to landing so they end up taking the most costly and crowded Cayman Islands tours booked through the ship.

One example is cruise ship tour called: "Cali Shipwreck Snorkel Tour". The cruise ships sell this tour for anywhere from $50 - $100 per person and the passengers are herded around like cattle on crowded boats only to snorkel among a mass of people over a tiny little wreck of a wreck. The Cali is a nice snorkel site for beginners but taking a boat to get there is outright laughable.

This is a picture of the Cali shipwreck site, located in George Town, about 50 yards away from shore. Almost anyone could easily swim to it in about 30 seconds - a minute tops, if not a good swimmer or in poor physical health.

You would need to bring your own mask and fins but If you don't own a set of gear, you could purchase a decent Mask/Fins/Snorkel set at a local store or online for about $25; they would pay for themselves many times over just at the stops on a single cruise. Snorkel gear can be rented right in George Town at Eden Rock Dive Center, which is about 100 yards from where the cruise ships disembark for about $10/day; bring the Activity Guide coupon or ask for any current Activity Guide specials and possibly pay even less. The Cali is about a 30 second swim and a fife minute walk from the cruise ship dock and it's absolutely FREE. Be sure to bring along a dive flag to alert any passing boats to your position. This is just one example of a George Town tour that could easily be conducted on your own for free instead of paying a ludicrous price to the cruise ship. You can find many other George Town tours, trips and attractions that you can do absolutely free by taking a few minutes to register at our forums, which takes about 30 seconds and is absolutely free.

Another scheme is the "Cruise Line Recommended" sign, which you will spot in the windows and doors of various shops. This provides absolutely no indication whatsoever as to the credibility, reliability or value of any particular establishment in George Town or anywhere else; rather, it means that the shop or store has paid one of the many cruise lines for advertising their business and they receive that sticker in return. If you want true unbiased reviews of the many shops, restaurants and attractions in George Town, visit our forums, where visitors have posted their first hand experiences; or see our shopping section.
