Cayman is rich in beauty and culture. Points of interest include: the clock tower, public library, post office, and harbor. You will find a broad selection of artifacts at the National Museum—an artifact in itself, being the oldest building in town. Located directly on the waterfront near Fort Street, the Seaman’s Monument and Fort George provide engaging photo opportunities. Fort George was constructed in 1790 to defend against French and Spanish marauders. The original cannons remain in tact. George Town Harbour is the primary port of call for cargo & cruise ships The steam powered clock tower in George Town was built in 1937 as a monument to King George V, for whom the town was named. Turtle Farm is one of the country’s most celebrated attractions. With an average population of over 16,000, the farm produces some 8,000 hatchlings annually. Since its inception in 1980 nearly 30,000 turtles have been released to the sea. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with a unique and endangered species, and perceive their intriguing life cycle from a tiny egg to a full grown turtle weighing over 500 lbs. A modest admission fee of CI$6.00 helps sustain this vital ecological institution. Fish is aptly named for its netherworld appearance. A quarter acre of exposed ironshore devoid of life presents a unique panoramic photo opportunity. Stop by the post office and send your friends a genuine "postcard from Fish". At the far west end of Seven Mile Beach lies Cemetery Beach. Easily identified by the brightly decorated gravesites, look for the Beach Access sign and follow the short trail to the beach. Sightseeing Tip: Commuter traffic is at its peak weekdays between 8-9am and 5-6pm. Plan your excursions around these periods to facilitate your travel. While the Cayman Islands enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the Caribbean, thefts do occur, particularly when items are left unsecured While primarily revered for its superb snorkeling, the beach is charming in its own right, removed somewhat from the profusion of Seven Mile Beach. Capacious trees furnish ample shade and picnic tables are available for public use. Be respectful of the adjoining property which is roped off and not open to the public.Seven Mile Beach (as the name implies), is one extensive beach nearly seven miles long. Miles of white sand caressing tranquil turquoise waters dotted with resorts, condos, shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants and every conceivable watersport. If you can’t find anything you like to do on Seven Mile Beach, you may want to re-think your next vacation. While there are many public beaches on the island, the most acclaimed is simply referred to as "Public Beach". Located near the Westin, It offers a wide range of amenities which include: a well equipped playground, colorful cabanas, picnic tables, bar-b-que pits and bathroom facilities. This, along with fine snorkeling and swimming in a large partitioned swim area create an ideal playground for families, gatherings and celebrations.South Sound refers to the bay of water and adjoining land along this southern stretch of the island. The sound, less than 8ft deep, is largely comprised of turtle grass, rocks, juvenile fish and stingrays. Not particularly suited to swimming or snorkeling, windsurfing seems to be the activity of choice when conditions are favorable. Smith Cove lies just outside this prestigious community of predominately modern upscale homes. Lush foliage line both sides of the road which is also sparsely scattered with restaurants, hotels and shops. Red Bay Dock lies near the easternmost end of South Sound Road, and will most likely be your departure point if you find yourself diving during a nor’wester. Fast Facts: R Seven Mile Beach is actually closer to 6.5 miles in length. R There are approximately 4,000 hotel and condo rooms available to visitors, most of which are on or adjacent to Seven Mile Beach. The tranquil waters of Seven Mile Beach afford endless opportunities for beach enthusiasts Smith Cove provides a shady retreat as a prelude to excellent swimming, diving and snorkeling Fast Fact: R A nor’wester is a storm which generates strong winds and high seas along the north and west areas of the island. Nor’westers typically occur between November and April, usually lasting 2–3 days. If you are staying in the Seven Mile Beach area, you can walk to one of the island’s newest popular nature attractions, the Butterfly Farm. Located just off the main road on the Harquail Bypass (see map 3) you will see the charming little Cayman style building that houses this beautiful and exotic attraction.
