That little island would be a great place for a little casino action. How come someone there doesn't tap into that market. The payout would be phenominal. wink

It's called The Gambling Law (1996 Revision).

adrian,

After swimming, snorkeling, diving and rum punch all day, everyone is asleep by 9:00 there....no time to gamble, thankfully!

A lot of bad things come along with gambling. I don't really think it would fit in the friendly peaceful crime-free environment of the Cayman Islands.

Last thing the CI's need is wiseguys.

they consider themselves a Christian island and no place for that kind of thing. Have you noticed how early the bars close. No dancing on Sundays.

Very quiet beaches.

EDIT: With revisions to the liquor laws in 2004, many bars now stay open until 3am. - Joe

The last thing they need is a casino, well besides the dolphin park. As said, casinos tend to attract organized crime and other elements that would not fit into a peaceful and crime-free place like the Caymans. Look at the Bahamas as an example. wink

Who would have time for casinos? Not me, there is way too much to do. I agree with Celine, by the time you are done with all of the swimming, snorkeling, rum drinking, you are ready for bed by 9.

Went to the Bahamas a long time ago and it was nasty. Keep Cayman clean!

Though I agree there is plenty to do on CI without a casino, I would have to disagree that casino's attract organized crime. Unless you consider Donald Trump and Steve Wynn wiseguys. Corporations run casinos now. I would agree that other activities such as prostitution, loan sharking, etc., are attracted to casinos though. The casino itself isn't the problem, it's keeping it clean that is.

Funny thing about the Bahamas, they have gambling, but Bahamians are not allowed to gamble. Only the tourists.

Add my vote for keeping casinos out of the Cayman Islands. Allowing casinos would certainly lead to an increase in crimes as people got hooked on the illusion of striking it rich and needed money to fuel their habit.

Gambling seems to be a lot like drugs in that respect. Both are best avoided.

Gambling is the worst addiction... You can't tell on the surface if someone has a problem. With drugs and booze, you can hit rock bottom. With gambling it's always "one more win and I'll be out of trouble"... Not for me..

Not a gambler and never have been to Vegas or even in a casino until our trip to Cayman back in December. We missed our flight out of FLL and chose to stay in Lauderdale. They have this huge, brand new(where Anna Nicole died) Seminole Casino with Hotel so we thought we would check it out and maybe play a slot machine and have some fun.

I was expecting to walk in and see people laughing and partying and living it up...NOT...while the place was decorated nice and laid out very cool there was this oppression in the air. People were putting their money in the thousands of slot machines like robots, playing Texas Hold Em at the tables, etc. Nobody was smiling and it seemed they were all laboring not "playing". It was very weird and felt like we were in a prison yard. I had NO desire even to play a slot machine. We left and stayed at The Wyndam down the road.

No thanks...

Personally, I enjoy the occasional trip to Vegas.

Getting back to the question asked, the Cayman Islands are a very conservative, Christian country (British protectorate).

The fact that there are no casinos fits right in with grocery and liquor stores being closed on Sunday, the total ban on nudity on the beaches, and the most restrictive school uniform policies in the western world.

I agree. I worked for a while at a department store (Meijer, for you midwesterners out there) and I started at the lottery desk. I saw the folks who were on welfare trying to scrape up the money to buy their daily tickets knowing that this time, they had the "pattern" for the week figured out and were going to win big.

I often left work feeling just a bit dirty Evil ...So, I transfered to the security department and arrested the same unemployed folks when they had to steal to feed their kids. Sheesh.

Thinking back on those folks it makes me thankful for the blessings I have of a good job, good health, good starter wife, etc.

Oh, boy. I better stop. You all will think I'm a softy!

DS,

I'll never think of anyone who uses the phrase "good starter wife" as a softy. You are far braver than I.
