Can anyone also recommend a really fun nightspot with either live or DJ music and dancing? My husband and I are in our early 40s, and would love to find a lively nightspot that's lots of fun with good music and dancing. Also, I read somewhere that there's a place at Rum Pointe that's a fun place to have lunch and hang out during the day. Anyone know it? Also, how far is Rum Pointe from the Marriott Beach Resort? We will probably do taxis, instead of renting a car. Are taxi fares pretty reasonable from the Marriott to popular locations?

Royal Palms!

Live music.....dancing outside under the stars......no cover charge. Thursdays through Saturdays.....I think the music starts at 8:00 p.m.

If you don't have a car, it's about a 15 or 20 minute walk up the beach from the Marriott!

Add the luaus to your list. The most inexpensive one is at Stinger's at Comfort Suites. The Marriott offers a spectacular show every Friday with much more food but it costs a little more. They both have live music and dancing so it's just a matter of choosing the one that best suits your budget and preferences.

The Courtyard Marriott has a Beach Barbecue with live music every Wednesday.

You will find discounts for all of these and just about everything else listed so far in Activity Guide when you arrive.

If you want to book anything ahead of time, let us know and we'll provide the contact information. The Stingers Luau tends to sell out several days ahead of time. Wink

As far as a taxi to Rum Point, I think you might be better off just dashing over from where you are staying and renting a car for the day from Andy's (there's a discount if you mention the Cayman Activity Guide) if you go during off commute hours (after 9 a.m. and before 4 p.m.) then it will be a lovely drive and you can stop at some of our interesting spots along the way including our Botanic Park. Unfortunately the ferry is not operating over to Rum Point at the moment so it is a bit of a drive to get to Rum Point so you might as well make a day of it if you want to go.

Can someone explain the rationale for not renting taxis on Grand Cayman? I've never seen this before and we've visited several Caribbean islands. Are they outrageously expensive and if so, please give me an example in US dollars. We're not used to driving on the left side of the road, so that's why we don't want to rent a car. I also read somewhere that renting a car on Grand Cayman requires purchasing a driver's license there, which is also expensive. So, I'm trying to figure out which is better? I'm confused! We don't plan on "exploring" the entire island, but simply want to try a few restaurants and nightspots. We are staying at the Marriott Beach Resort. And if renting a car is the only way to go, can you suggest some good rental agencies near the airport? Thanks for all your replies. They have been very helpful to a "newbie"!

Hi b7golf,

Taxis are expensive is the only reason most people rent a car instead....as gjm mentioned, could be well over $150.00CI for the round trip to Rum Point.... and if you look at a map of the island you'll see that it is a long way around to get over there.... and just like in the U.S., the longer the route, the higher the taxi fare...

As for driving on the left, you really get used to it very quickly.... I was apprehensive at first, but after a few minutes it was second nature... I do always ask for a car that has the steering wheel on the left, I'm much more comfortable being in a normal car!!

Andy's Rent-a-car is your best bet for a rental, and you get a discount for being a member here.... they are located right outside the door of the airport... very convenient... I have already reserved my car for our visit next month and was very happy with the rate, a bit more than $40.00 per day!!! Use the discount code CAG20 when making your reservation...

The drivers license you purchase is only $7.50... you can add it in with your Andy's reservation and pick it up when you get the car....

Hope I answered all your question, feel free to search the forums for additional information that may make your stay more enjoyable....

Captain Jack,

Thanks for the explanation on taxis. If we can rent a car with the steering wheel on the left side, that wouldn't be so bad. But, I'm still curious how much $150CI is in US dollars? I don't know the conversion rate. Do we need to email or call ahead to reserve a rental car with Andy's or just show up the day we arrive? Thanks again for all the helpful info.

Wow, I had no idea a taxi ride on a caribbean island would be as much as $180 US dollars! No wonder everyone rents cars! Thanks so much for the info and for the link to Andy's Rental Car agency. I love this forum! Y'all are so great!

And by the way, I just sent an email to Oh Boy Charters to get reservation info on the new Sunset Dinner Cruise. Sure hope it's up and running in time for our trip at the end of April. It sounds really special.

Thanks again!

b7golf,

If you decide to rent a car, I think you have to reserve it from Andy's two weeks ahead, and on-line, in order to get the CAG discount. And of course, type in CAG 20 as the code, as Joe just mentioned.

Don't worry about driving on the left. You really will get used to it right away. What you really need to worry about, actually, is stepping off the curb as a pedestrian. That really takes some extra care.

Oh, as for the steering wheel......we always prefer the steering wheel on the right, not the left, cause it's actually easier when driving on the left hand side of the road. You have to experience it to know what I mean. Of course, you constantly turn on the windshield wipers when you really wanted to signal a turn Very Happy

Now, with that all being said, that $150 CI cab ride was if you were to go all the way to Rum Point and back........that's an extraordinarily long cab ride. Probably no one would ever do that. So, if you just go by cabs to the restaurants up and down the West side, they won't be nearly that bad. Sorry, I'm not up on the taxi rates, cause we like the freedom of having a car for getting around.....

Good luck with your planning...

Char

Rolling Over Laughing Hey b7gol,

Cabs are expensive everywhere these days do to these terrible gas prices. A bfish

Also, Rum Pointe is at least an hour away, and then some if ou stop to take photos and look at the surrounding areas on your way up.(Like I did) I stayed at the Marriott Beach resort and you can so easily walk right across the street to Andy and pick up the car for a day. It isn't terribly hard driving on the wrong side of the road, just follow the people in front of you. Very Happy

be sure to ask Andy's for a Map of the island or print one off of here. You will see it is an easy ride and well worth th $40 bucks for a car rental.

You will be most pleased and look forward to hearing about your adventures when you come back. All the best,

Michelle

PS I agree with scubachar re: Royal Palms, we walked there from the Marriott on the beach! It's wonderful. band1

Every time I'm there and say "the wrong side of the road", I'm told that I drive on the wrong side of the road... Now I just say "the other side of the road".

And as scubachar says, it is easier driving on the left with a right hand drive car. And if it's a stick shift, yes, the gear shift lever is on the left, but at least they don't swap the pedals!!
