My husband often uses a metal detector when diving. Can anyone please advise if they are legal to use in the Caymans? Thanks!

Metal detectors are legal in the Caymans. However, being a part of the British Empire, they might expect you to turn anything of value over to the authorities! Good luck!

southernmost,

We brought our metal dector last year. We had no problems withcustoms, and we had some interesting finds. We took it apart and packed the electronic part in our carry-on. The other, cheaper components we checked inside our luggage.

Has anyone used a metal detector on the beach? I would guess that things could be interesting given the typical clientele of most of the hotels and resorts.

Along those same lines, is there a place to check-out in regards to renting metal detecting equipment?

Thanks!

Hi Tim,

I can't tell you where to rent a detector or even if there is a place, but wanted to share our experience. We used our metal detector on the beach last year. We found a rusted umbrella and a lot of rusty screws in front of our resort, most likely from Hurricane Ivan. At Royal Palms (see webcam above - lots of cruise ship people go there) we found way too many beer bottle caps and a few cruise ship tokens, along with several quarters. We also found what my husband refers to as his "pirate silver", a small piece of old pitted silver, looks to be maybe an old knife or sword?? We found that on the East End. Enjoy the pics! - Antoinette

Classic, LOL

Antoinette,

I wish you could have found a ring or two to tell us about. Bonnie and I are planning on doing a little hunting in the next few days when it isn't too hot... and there's a nice breeze. We went over to GC yesterday and found a nice diamond ring, but it was in a jewelery store! BTW, what the heck is that in the third pic?

Gene

Hi Gene, That third pic is the umbrella topper I mentioned. Not the whole umbrella; just the top part that goes above a vent in the umbrella. Unfortunately no diamond rings to tell about.... maybe this year! BouncingLaugh

We saw a lady who runs one of the local gift shops on Sunday using her metal detector on 7 mile beach.......she told us she has quite a collection of gold and she does find men's wedding bands.

Happy hunting.
