We have been visiting the caymans for almost ten years now and have been waiting anxiously for the Links to reopen. After discovering that they are now a Ritz course, which will obviously either be exclusive to their guests or ridiculously expensive, we will look for other islands to vist on our future vacations.

It is extremely unfortunate that what was once the most charming laid back island in the Caribbean has sold out to the Ritz. It was bad enough to see that monstrosity in the middle of the beach area, creating traffic problems and ruining the landscape. But this is the last straw! There are many other islands that offer golf to EVERYONE at reasonable prices.

I hope my message is clear enough that it is more than just losing the golf course that will cause us and probably many other visitors to go to other islands. It is more like the straw that broke the camel's back. 'nuff said.

It's always sad to see change and "progress", especially when it adversely affects something that we have come to enjoy. However, there's really not much that we can do about it, and there are many people who like the changes. Believe me, I've seen a lot of growth and construction in the 23 years that I've been traveling to Cayman, but despite that, it will always be my "charming laid back Caribbean island".

Clearly, golf is a very important part of your Cayman vacation. I'm sure you know that the Hyatt course is open and available. But it sounds like you were ready for a change, so I wish you luck in your ventures to some other islands.

Maybe we'll see you back some day Palm.

My husband and I love the caymans too but we also love golf. Confused

We are not at all the "ritzy" type either, which is why we choose the chraming caymans as our destination of choice.

Not any more.

Selling out to the Ritz deals a sad and devistating blow to us and I am sure any other tourists that go there to play golf.

Good bye caymans, I bid you well, it was wonderful while it lasted.

I have to say that I agree. To be honest, there seems far more commercialisation of the Caymans (certainly Grand Cayman) than I had expected. It's a shame but I think there are now probably nicer and certainly more natural Caribbean destinations.

And now I hear they are going to build another dolphin park there at the Links. The Ritz wasn't bad enough, Selling out the links wasn't bad enough, One dolphin park wasn't bad enough, Now put all of this together and throw away your tourists.

Why not just put up a big sign:

Welcome To Cayman

Cruise Ship Only

Land Visitors No Longer Welcome

It would have the same effect.

The whole thing would be funny if it was not so sad.

OK....that's enough Rolling Eyes . It's time to lock this thread.

Potterfamily, you began with an announcement that Safehaven has sold their Links golf course to the Ritz Carlton, so now we all know that.

Before writing this, I checked with the Cayman Net News and copied these two sentences from an article discussing this very same rumor about the possibility of a dolphin park going in where Safehaven is now:

From the Cayman Net News (9/14/07):

Quote:
Dale Crighton, one of the partners of Dolphin Discovery Cayman Ltd, has informed Cayman Net News that his establishment is not involved in a relocation to SafeHaven.

Quote:
A moratorium exists on the establishment of any new dolphinariums in the Cayman Islands.

So your comments are nothing more than a false rumor, and touches on the very controversial subject of the proposed dolphin park.

This is a board dedicated to helping people plan for their Cayman vacations, as well as those who have already vacationed in the islands, to share their experiences and recommendations to others. It is not a forum to necessarily bash the Caymans and dissuade others from going.....

If you have nothing to say but negative things about the Cayman Islands, as much as we respect your opinion, we ask you to limit your comments to positive and/or constructive criticisms. If you are unable to do that, you will lose your posting privileges.

I am sure this information came from the Cayman Net News, which is about as reputable around here as the National Enquirer. I have heard the same rumors myself but I do not go posting them in public until I have verified my sources; something that any reputable journalist should feel obligated to do.

When I know something for certain I will post it. In the mean time, the posts above contain no confirmed information. Please treat the information accordingly.
