We arrive Grand Caman 9-28-06 via Carnival Cruise at about 10am leaving about 3pm and don't quite know what to do. We are a family of 3, 2 of which have knee pain and can't walk long distances. We were considering the : butterfly farm, shopping, and a beach (free beach with shade would be nice). Has anyone been to the butterfly farm? Is it worth the time and what is the cost? Do we have time to do all this? Would like to see even more. Can we get a cab for the day or how does that work? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi jollys3 -

The first thing to consider would be a Stingray City trip with Soto's Cruises or Oh Boy Charters. It's an easy relaxing activity and if you can walk and float, you can enjoy Stingray City. You will find videos, photos and all the information for them in our Stingray City forum. If you want to make a reservation with Soto's you can contact them at

Be sure to mention that you are an Activity Guide member. Wink

Glenda,

Hi! I have been to the Butterfly Farm, and I think that you would love it. I will tell you that it will be a little warm, bring a hat . They have benches in the shade and water avaliable for you. Wear perfume, the butterflies will love you! I was there for almost 3 hours(on Island for 10 days) you won't probably stay that long. The people that run it are so very nice, and they have a great shop there too!

If you don't go to Stingray City, the Turtle Farm is growing in leaps and bounds. You can have hands on there. Nice souvenir shop!

I don't have any idea about beaches, someone will though, just wait a little while, glad you found this site, you now will have a truly great day on the Grand Cayman! Come back and visit after your cruise is over and let us know about your day!!!

Pam

If you don't make it to Stingray City wth Soto's, which is an unforgettable experience (there is only one SRC...) the Butterfly Farm is an excellent choice. Even from a "guy's perspective", I found the place to be fascinating. And Royal Palms is almost right across the street, where you can enjoy the beach view from the shade of an umbrella while sipping your favorite libation...

Get an Activity Guide, you should get a discount at the Farm. For those of you that stay for a longer visit, you get a pass, and once you have paid admission, the pass gets you back in for free during your stay on the Island.

Not sure if you are interested in any snorkeling, but Spanish Bay Reef has transportation from the ships, they have a pool, serve lunch and drinks, with a snorkle area there, There is sand, but no sandy beach. There is an offer through the guide for this, if this interests you, let me know I will find the link. You can also see a report on the resort in this forum and several trip reports.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Keep em comin! I keep getting good feed back on stingray city. My daughter can't swim and is little afraid of the water and short in stature. Would this still be a good option? Are you allowed to post cost. If so I need to know about that as well as the butterfly farm. Also is the beach free, just buy a drink or something? Thanks again.

Read this, and as I can remember, go to the first stoplight turning right out of Coconut Joes. Go to stoplight, cross street, tuning right after you cross street. Keep walking it is I think the first place on that side of the road. There is a parking lot, and you can see the netting in the back. You will enjoy it for sure!(I am older and more feeble now......... Wink directions might not be perfect!)

Boatswain's Beach now offers a butterfly encounter as part of their full park package so you do not have to pay separately to see the butterflies.

For this reason and other factors, we have discontinued our promotions of the Butterfly Farm, at least for the time being.
