My family and I will be visiting Grand Cayman as one of our ports of call when we take our first cruise in May of 2008.My children are 15 and 6 years old. We have looked over a lot of possible things to do and have settled on two. First is Boatswains Beach Adventure, for the turtle farm and the other activities they offer (how would you rate Boatswains Beach Adventure as a destination?) and secondly, Rum Point was highly recommended as a destination by several friends who have visited previously. The problem arises when I look at the two places on a map. They seem about as far apart from one another as you can get. We are renting a car(any suggestions on car rentals) for our day in Grand Cayman, so we would be driving from Georgetown to the two destinations.

I know I will only have 8 hours maximum on shore and I would really love to do both places, but am I setting myself up for a day of aggravation rather than relaxation? In rum point we hope to find a non crowded beach with a restaurant and perhaps some beach and water activities. We also really like the look of of the trees along the beach. The thought of swinging from a hammock looking out on the water sounds wonderful. Is there anyplace between Georgetown and Botswana Beach that would fit what we are looking for in Rum Point? Ultimately this hopefully will not be our last cruise or trip to the Grand Caymans so if you think the two places are not doable in one day we can just choose one and look forward to the other on our return. Please let me know what you think. Thank You

Hi anesthesiachris -

You are right, there is no way you could do both in the same day and there is really no comparison between the two. Rum Point is a nice place to visit if you are here for a week but with only one day, Boatswain's Beach provides a complete, ultimate, fulfilling experience with dozens of exciting attractions combined and many not available anywhere else in the world. Please read our Boatswain's Beach topic with photos and get a feel for all the incredible things you can do there. Be sure to book ahead and mention your Activity Guide discount as we do not make our publication available at the cruise dock.

Have to agree with Joe about Boatswain's Beach.......heck, you can even SWIM with the turtles!!!!!!! SO much to do there!

You're going to have many "at sea" days where you can relax, and really that's what you would've done at Rum Point. The water is beautiful and the food very good, and I do love those hammocks, but being on a cruise, you will have had all that on board or elsewhere. No way would I EVER attempt both.....you'll spend most of your one day on the paradise that is Cayman.......rushing and worrying about missing the ship from one place to the next............no way to spend a vacation day.......go say hi to all the turtles!

Celine

Do they have an excursion already available for Boatswains Beach? If so you should probably go that route, it is very time consuming renting a car and then returning it later and getting back to the ship. If there is an excursion planned you can just get on the bus at the Tender Dock and off you go.

Just a thought

Most of the ships do offer excursions to Boatswain's Beach but you will pay more and be bussed around with hundreds of other cruise passengers. The cost of hiring a Taxi is not that high if you get a few people together and share it; and you can do everything at your own leisurely pace without being herded around like cattle. With your Activity Guide discount, a group of 4 will save over $20 on the full park admission fee, plus whatever markup the ship takes, which should more than cover the cost of a taxi.
