Well now I know not to let her pack everything like she had planned. One thing did catch my interest was the tip to by bottled water unless you are used to drinking salt water. Guessing I need to by the bottled waters, because I just assumed that all tap water would taste the same Thanks for making me aware of that bit of info- I had seen other post that made it seem as if there was no need to buy your water. On that note- does that mean the ice my drink salty? <img>

Don't worry, although the tap water does not taste salty, it doesn't taste very good either. (Most of Grand Cayman's water is desalinated seawater...) It is definitely drinkable, it won't harm you, it's just not tasty. We use it for cooking. making ice, brushing teeth, etc, but If I'm going to drink straight water (usually to hydrate before diving) I drink bottled water. The Cayman bottled water doesn't taste well either.

BTW, it's a long discussion, but drinking seawater is lethal....

Our town water tastes fine. No saltiness or chlorine. But my wife drinks bottled water all the time, as I guess we will while we are in Cayman. They import bottled water at the grocery stores and the prices aren't too bad.

Oh ok.. lol now that i read back I meant to say "salty" water not exactly salt water. Guess we will just pick up some bottled water for drinking, and use the tap for everything else. Thanks

Hi

when we stayed on SMB side of the island, we used tap water for everything --although I seldom drank it just plain. Our son and daughter liked to get some bottled water. No problems though. We didn't mind it in our coffee, lemonade, tea etc.

When we stayed on the Northside, I used bottled water for everything including ice cubes because I wasn't exactly sure what the water was.

They are bringing city water to northside and that'll be nice, but I think it will be awhile yet before it's up and running.

We've always drank the water, but we've always been either on a private desalination plant (Morritt's) or the "city" water, so I can't speak for the quality of the water any place off of the water line. To me the "city" water on GCM tastes a whole lot better than the tap water in most of the US.

Thanks for the info. I do agree that alot of city water I have tried in various areas of the US has not been to tasty. I will suggest she grab bottled water to carry around while I focus more on the other drinks the island has to offer.

OK, here's my 2 cent's worth on the subject.

The water we had at my folks' place was rain water off the roof and into the cistern. It was soft and off-taste free.

Actually when my folks came home to Illinois in the summer, they had to drink bottled water because they couldn't stomach the "chemical" taste.

At our condo on North Side, we use either rain water, or, in a pinch, purchased water from the desalinization plant.

We have never had any problem with either the taste or the quality of the water.

from rain/cistern to Flowers water when there was no cracking station. City water is fine and yes it tastes BETTER than what we drink in Orlando. God the chemicals they dump into our water. Or is it Gator ____?

Never got "tourist tummy" either. My friend the "Evil One" got sick but I think that was from the quart a night tekillya she drank. Since I am a saint I NEVER got sick that way! Jump Jump Jump Jump

We've never had any problem drinking the local water on Grand Cayman, although we don't drink much of it. We do buy bottled beverages for drinking and use the tap water mostly for cooking and brushing teeth.

As a precaution, we always get a prescription of Cipro filled and take it with us just in case. This came in handy once in Honduras when tummy problems did come up.

Hmmm, is it bad form to use "come up" to refer to tummy problems?

Great idea for the tummy problems! Since I was going to the Caymans I hadnt even given it the consideration i would have for another island. Although I have my fingers crossed we wont need anything!!

I wouldn't worry about it. We have been staying on SMB for 38 years--no one in our family has ever had a problem and we always used tap water, even when we had little kids with us. In the old days, the water was rainwater from a cistern and then later city water. I see you're staying at the Marriott, so you won't have any problems.

Have a great trip

Shelly :-)
