I am planning to provision our condo and was wondering what brands of beer and rum are good and are good buys on Grand Cayman. I don't want to request a particular brand and find that it is 4X more than we are expecting it to cost. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

There are a lot of items that you can purchase here duty free and realize significant savings. Unfortunately, liquor is not one of them.

We recommend bringing your allotment of liquor from home, which is 4 bottles of wine; or 2 liters of alcohol; or a case of beer, per person. But by all means try at least one bottle of rum while you are in the Caribbean! We highly recommend Blackbeard?s rum and you will find discounts in the magazine when you arrive.

Have a great vacation!

Joe,

I'm pretty sure the allotment of hard liquor is just for 1 liter per person Margarita ......either that or we've really missed the boat by not bringing enough Rolling Eyes .....

Char,

Be sure to bring all you're allowed, so you'll have more left over to hand off as we pass at the airport... BouncingLaugh

AS IF we'd ever have any leftover.........we even have to ask the nice fellow at Big Daddy's if it's ok to not tear the CAG coupon out of the magazine, so that we can use it over.....and over......and over again. He always lets us do that!

Oh well, ya can't blame a guy for tryin'.

In truth, we usually keep up a fairly steady diving schedule, so we take it easy on the hooch.

Now, on the way back home at the duty fee shops, that's another matter!

amtw,

We usually bring our allotment of liquor with us and then purchase our beer on the island because it's a little harder to travel with. If you do purchase beer on the island you may want to check out Caybrew. It's a german style pilsner that tastes similar to Heineken or St. Pauli Girl. Heck, there's even a coupon (CAG) for a free beer if you visit the brewery! As I recall, this beer usually was a little less than most of the rest of the beer at the liquor stores.

P.S. If you are wine drinkers, the Big Daddy's near Treasure Island has a nice selection and the owner/manager? is pretty knowledgable.

Thank you very much Grateful Diver! There is no way that I would try to take beer ... too heavy and bulky. We plan on carry-on only, so we will have limited space. I think we will plan on taking some liquor or wine, but I am so glad that you told me about Big Daddy's for wine. We are staying at the Grandview, so it should be quite convenient for us. WE will have to try Caybrew too. Thanks!

Just remember amtw, you cannot bring liquids of more than 3 ounces in your carry on. Any liquor that you do bring along would have to be in checked baggage. Wink

Do you get the sense that I like this topic?!

Anyways, if you are departing the U.S. from an airport with a duty free, then I would suggest just picking up your libations from there. No need to worry about packing and its allowed as carryon as you will most likely be purchasing it from within the airport security zone.

Thanks! That thought just hit me. I definitely don't want to check any bags.

Grateful Diver,

Thank you again, and I am glad that you like the topic. Wink We fly through Atlanta, so that is what I will do.

Grateful Diver,

I just noticed that you are staying at TI. Have you stayed there before? We are staying at the Grandview, next door in about a month. I was just curious about that area (nearby restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) We will be traveling with 4 kids, ages 5-14. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
