I posted this as a response to the stickied snorkeling post, but I think I might miss some of you more experienced posters there.

I hope you can provide some help with a small question. We are a family of 5 that will be visiting Grand Cayman (sadly, only for 1 day on a cruise ship). I am looking for a beach that has good snorkeling and a good sand beach. These are normally not found together.

Is Smith Cove a decent sized beach? I hear the snorkeling is great, but I'm worried that the beach is too small. I can't find a picture of the beach itself. Can you give me a rough idea of how big the actual sand beach is? Any idea if we can rent chairs here? Is there much to do around the smith cove for some who might not want to spend hours on the beach or snorkeling like I will be doing ?

I don't mind going to 7 mile beach to get the good beach-type stuff like washrooms, chair rentals and lunch spots, and put up with semi-decent snorkeling. I've snorkeled in Hawaii (10/10) and Bahamas (1/10 at the site I went to), so really, if the water is 5-20 feet deep and has rocks/coral with lots of life, I'm a happy camper. I understand GC snorkeling is world class, so I didn't want to say I want excellent snorkeling and mislead you.

To make it easy, here are the things I am looking for in order of importance

1. Nice beach (Sandy beach, sandy entry)

2. Facilities at beach (food/restrooms/chair rentals, etc)

3. Decent snorkeling (see above)

Sorry for sounding so much like a tourist, and thanks in advance for your help! palm
