I'm not sure who offers this tour, but I've read where there is a Rum Point/Stingray Sandbar tour on waverunners. I'm having a hard time believing Grand Cayman would allow this. It can be quite busy there when there are several ships in port. I'm having a hard time figuring out what it will be like with waverunners zipping around.

Maybe this is something that's going to be more controlled that I think. I just love Stingray City, and I'd hate to see it change.

Any one heard anything about this? We're coming back next winter, and we're going with Soto's after reading all the wonderful things we've read about them here.

Maddie,

You tweaked my curiosity about this, so I did a little searching. Like you, I just can't believe that they would allow such a thing. From what I can tell, it is a guided excursion for cruise ship passengers. I think they only allow six of them at a time, and hopefully, they make them stay way back away from all the people and sting rays.........then I guess they speed off to Rum Point.

So, it is "controlled", since it is a guided shore excursion. I still can't believe it!

Char

Char, I agree. Even in a controlled environment, I can't believe this is good, IMO. So if they allow six at a time (per group), I wonder if they are going to allow more than one group of six out there at a time? I hope not.

I just can't help but think a stingray is going to get hurt. They are all over the place out there, and now they're going to have to dodge the waverunners.

I know people want to have fun, we all do. But sometimes you have to look at the big picture and I can't imagine anyone wants to see Stingray Sandbar close, or worse, those beautiful creatures injured. And it's going to happen. They can say what they want (abou tbeing controlled), but someone will go off and do what they aren't supposed to do, or will accidentally harm an animal, or maybe even a person.

It will be interesting to see how this tour works out.

Well this is good information. I will see if I can cancel it. The waverunners though only allow no more than 3 people on the boat. They appear to be just a little bit bigger than a jet-ski. I hope that helps with your concerns.

Just to add to this somewhat. During our last trip to Cayman our niece and nephew went to SRC sandbar and then to rum point on jet ski's. I asked specifically about these concerns. There were 2 couples + the tour guides so there were 3 jet skis going. There were not any cruise ships in town this day. I felt fairly certain that the sand bar was not going to be too crowded this day. The stop the jet ski's befor they actually get to the sting rays. They usually start making their way when they realize there are people and food in the water. Once they are out of food and they know there meal is up they started disappearing. It was then that they started up the jet ski's and took off. They assured me that this was very safe for people and the stingrays.

I found this board while trying to find more information about this excursion - I found it through ********** (not directly through the cruise line - although we will be visiting while on a cruise) and it's called the 'rays, reef and rum point excursion. I agree with the other posters who are concerned for the stingrays - I honestly never even thought about them being in danger from the waverunners - I just assumed that we'd have to stop the wave runners before getting too close. This is definitely something I'm going to research a little more!!

sorry, no outside websites allowed here per our TOS - scubachar

I apologize for bad information - I just got some more information on the nativeway excursion and this is NOT on a waverunner - sorry!! This is on a boat w/ up to 25 people.
