Wow, tropical storm Felix is now a hurricane..........looks like the ABC islands will get a lot of rain and wind...........it's predicted to take the same path as Dean. help

Joe, you may have to put your car back in your living room. Shock Shock

I am sure you will keep everyone updated. You did a fantastic job with Dean. ThumbsUp

Actually, I just checked a bunch of hurricane sites on the Internet and all the computer models show Felix heading on a much more southerly route than Dean was. In fact, as of now, the closest that the eye of the hurricane is expected to come to Grand Cayman is about 234 miles away sometime around mid-day on Tuesday. Dean had been expected to come within 10 or 15 miles, and ended up passing about 100 miles to the south (thank God!), so if Felix stays on its expected path, it will pass quite far to the south of Cayman.

So probably no worries for Cayman on this one......I hope Rolling Eyes .

Yikes! My Old Man Bay friend and I just finalized our October trip to Belize. Don't think Felix will be a problem for Cayman, but Central America is another story.

This system is not expected to pose any threat to the Cayman Islands. If the predictions should change I will of course monitor it closely along with the rest of you.

NSS,

Wow, you're sure a travelin' gal. What's taking you to Belize? We've eyed it for diving, but haven't been there yet. The closest we've come to it is Roatan, Honduras.

Glad to know there is no threat for the Caymans.........earlier today the weather channel had the Caymans on a hurricane watch.

Actually, at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Cayman Islands Government issued a Tropical Storm watch, not a Hurricane Watch, which is still in effect.

Even though the eye of Hurricane Felix is now expected to pass almost 300 miles to the south of Cayman, it is such a strong storm, that it will almost definitely bring them a couple of stormy days. They are expecting heavy rain and possible flooding in low lying areas, along with some gusty winds and probably rolling waves for a couple of days.

Lucky again clapping , at least for Cayman!

Not being familiar with how quickly the spin off storm may travel, what days do you expect it to be ugly? We are set to arrive day after tomorrow. Confused

Hi ChefZiggy,

I'm certainly no authority and I am only reporting from what I'm reading on various hurricane sites and some Cayman news sites......but, you may be totally in luck!

Seems that the Cayman government lifted the Tropical Storm Watch as of 7:00 p.m. tonight and now it sounds like there really won't be much of an effect from the storm at all, so you may not have any ugly days!

Here's what I read on the Cayman Government Hurricane Preparedness website tonight:

Quote:
Published 3rd September, 12:28pm

The latest news on Hurricane Felix provides a better outlook for Grand Cayman.

Dr. Barbara Carby, director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI), says, "Based on current forecasts from our Met Office, it is likely that the weather conditions will be better than earlier advisories indicated. We're considering lifting the tropical storm watch for Grand Cayman this afternoon. The 4:00pm release will reflect the decision."

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, reports that at 10 a.m. Hurricane Felix was located near 14.3 N, 77.8 W or 265 miles south to southeast of Jamaica, 418 miles southeast of Grand Cayman and 365 miles east of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Nicaragua/Honduras border. Felix is moving west at 21 mph with maximum sustained winds near 160 mph. The storm is now forecast to pass 298 miles south of Grand Cayman, on Tuesday morning. Tropical storm winds extend 115 miles from the storm's center, hurricane force winds, 30 miles.

Satellite pictures indicate that Felix's spiral bands have become more tightly wrapped around the storm's center, so these bands will not affect Grand Cayman as forecasted earlier. However Grand Cayman is still expected to receive cloudy spells with a few showers and some thunder. Moderate northeast winds and rough seas are forecast for overnight and tomorrow morning. A small craft warning is in effect, and a tropical storm watch continues for Grand Cayman.

As I said, the Tropical Storm Watch did end up being lifted at 7:00 p.m.

Have a wonderful trip!

Char

Please pray for the Miskito Indians along the Nicaragua coast. I have a very close friend who has a ministry there. Over the last 15 years or so he and his family have built many schools for their tribes and helped these people lead better lives. Felix appears to be smacking them with 150+ winds as I write this. He and his family are state side right now but obviously are very concerned for their extended family along the Rio Coco.
