jpep:

I've been in contact via e-mail with Soto's about booking our trip with them to SRC. The answer I received back indicated that the trip includes SRC and a trip to Coral Gardens. Do they have a separate trip you can book to insure you are taken to the barrier reef? Is it something that you can't request until you are actually on the boat and know what the seas are like?

Thanks, Karen2

When we went to SRC with Soto's in November, I had assumed we would go to the barrier reef, and never brought it up with anyone at Soto's, but we went to the Coral Gardens. I recall comments on the board that Soto's also went to the barrier reef and that it was a superior snorkeling location. I am unsure if it can be requested in advance, or if it is contingent on water conditions... perhaps someone else can help with an answer to this one....

I just received a response from Soto's regarding my further inquiry about stopping at Barrier Reef as opposed to Coral Gardens. It was from Kerry and read:

"Thank you for your message.

We understand that the eels at the Barrier Reef can

be unpredictable therefore we are not offering this stop

right now, thanks for your understanding.

KERRY, SOTOS CRUISES"

I have to say, I am disappointed about not being able to go to the better snorkeling spot, but I did get a good laugh out of his/her (sorry, not sure whether Kerry is a female or male) wording!!! Jump

Do you suppose that means that it's unpredictable as to whether or not the eels will make a showing while we are there, or did one decide to take a taste of someone????? redbite Very Happy

I'm just guessing, but I think it must mean that the eels are misbehaving. If they were just being evasive, that wouldn't be reason enough to not go snorkeling there, because there is so much else to see.

That's kind of weird, though, isn't it?

Kerry is indeed a lovely lady and my guess is that they want to make sure everyone gets the classic photo ops with the eel and the nurseshark. It is a beautiful area to snorkel from my experience last year and this spring. Wink

Karen2,

Even though you would have to miss the barrier, coral gardens is a beautiful place to snorkel. It was my favorite snorkel spot until I saw what Eden Rock was like!!! In fact, when I had my reef aquarium in California I set it up to look like the coral gardens.

I loved just floating over and focusing on one section of coral and watching all the activity that was taking place. When you stay still and just watch, all the hiding critters come out to take a look..... very cool!!

You will still have a great time regardless of the stop and once you get on the boat you can ask the captain if he will take you to the barrier instead, sometimes they will... In fact when all of us Mods went out with Sotos last month we requested they go to the barrier instead of the coral gardens.... and they did....

Have a Great Day!!!

.... Now I've gone and made myself jealous of your upcoming trip!!! I wish I was going snorkeling at the coral gardens!!! Kay, let's forget about the September Lions game and shoot down to Cayman for a long weekend instead!!!! Wink

Sounds good to me Capt. Of course I feel that way all the time hanging out here. Don't know if lionsguy would feel the same...

I guess I will go ahead and book the SRC trip. We'll inquire when we get on the boat about going to Barrier Reef. I agree. Even if we can't go there, it will still be a fun and beautiful trip.

Maybe the eels will have an "attitude adjustment" in the next few weeks! Wink

Our Stingray City trip is scheduled for a Friday at 930 a.m. I'm wondering if that is going to be a bad time to be traveling from the north side of the island to the SMB area in order to take the trip. I'm hoping those of you who live on the island or are frequent visitors can advise me:

1. Will we hit commuter traffic during that time?

2. How long should we allow to get from the north side to SMB?

3. Would the traffic be better if I changed our SRC trip to Saturday instead?

4. Is it recommended to take the morning SRC trip over the afternoon trip? In some places, such as Hawaii, it is better to snorkel in the morning before the winds come up. Is that the case on GC?

As always, thanks for your help!!

Since I personally have never gone on a Soto's SRC cruise, could someone that has gone please let me know how many you usually have on the boat? I jut got our confirmation for my son and gf, and they were wondering. Thanks.

When we went with Soto's in June, we had 24 people on the boat, besides the two guys running the boat. It didn't feel crowded at all and there was plenty of seating. I'm sure they'll have a great time. Hopefully, you've booked them on a day without any cruise ships in? We went on a Saturday - no ships - and it was great. Not many people out there fighting for the stingrays' attention.

Unfortunately there are 3 other ships besides the one they are on. But they are looking so forward to this. We just got their confirmation in last night so they are really excited now.

I sent them a bunch of info on the island (including a CAG mag!) and they have been looking at that really hard! I want them to come back with us next year for a full week. I think they will be hooked once they get there and realize they want to do all this stuff and won't have alot of time to do it. I have prepared them for that thought. I am really excited for them (but I guess you cant tell that, huh?)

Hi Jana,

When we were with Soto's in 2004, the first trip had 22 or 23 and there was plenty of room on the boat, second 04 trip there was 18, (just watched that underwater DVD again yesterday ThumbsUp ).... and at the MOD trip this last March there was 11 of us....

I've never felt crowded on their boat...... They should have a great time!

Jack
