It is a shame what people will do for the almighty dollar! Stingray City is such a great excursion and they are totally wrecking it...what a total shame!!!

Hey Caymantwins,

Good to see ya!

And I can't agree more with your take on the topic at hand.

I have no objection to someone having a drink but when you combine sting rays and just one drunk the lawsuits will be never ending. It will be only a matter of time before someone either steps or falls on a ray and then all hell will break loose. The simple solution is to not have alcohol out there.

The liability insurance must be astronomical too. I'm wondering who gets sued when some inebriated tourist is stung or ends up swimming off into the open ocean. The company that brought them out there would be the first person to get sued, and then they could say it was because of the bar for getting them drunk. Maybe they all get sued so the courts sort it all out.

I think making alcohol that convenient is a nightmare waiting to happen. By turning Stingray City into a circus act, the tourists will see it as such and throw all caution to the wind. It is after all, still a type of wild refuge sanctuary, and only a few yards away from the open ocean.

What's next? Giant billboards? Maybe a floating internet cafe? Confused

Maybe a boat-in movie theatre with a floating, inflatable screen. Midnight screenings of Jaws would be a hit, as would re-runs of Crocodile Hunter episodes... Sheesh.

PostPosted: Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:25 am    Post subject: Stingray City bar protest planned

From the Dec. 30th Caymanian Compass:

Quote:
A protest against the new Stingray City ‘floating bar’ boat is to take place in Heroes’ Square, George Town on Monday.

Stringray City.
A bar boat facility was granted a retail liquor licence and a music and dancing licence at the 10 December Liquor Licensing Board meeting.

The vessel will sail out to anchor and operate in the area of Stingray City, contingent on passing other legal requirements from Department of Environmental Health, Port Authority, Liquor Inspector and the Commissioner of Police.

When musician and artist Natasha Kozaily read the news that was broken by the Caymanian Compass, she said she was ‘upset’.

“Stingray City is a natural place where you can go and be with the stingrays in the wild. It’s a place for children and families to enjoy and interact with nature in the North Sound,” she said.

Ms Kozaily said she initially began writing a letter to the newspaper but as she did so she found herself more ‘riled up’ and decided to be more proactive.

Facebook

Ms Kozaily said she began talking with her family and immediate friends before using the power of social networking sites like Facebook to find other like–minded people and emailing organisations around Cayman that had the same view about the bar vessel.

“Having spoken to people and seen the letters in the Compass it was obvious that putting a floating bar in this natural environment will pollute the area with all the trash produced. It will also change the whole atmosphere of Stingray City from something that families and tourists can enjoy during the day to somewhere that people go and get drunk.

“Our priority should be protecting stingrays rather than exploiting them, which is what this bar is all about. [The bar is] not a community thing; it’s an individual who will benefit. Stingray City belongs to all Caymanians and it’s sad we did not have a say in this as it’s our national heritage,” she said.

Objections

Marva Scott, executive secretary of the Liquor Licensing Board of Grand Cayman, said that formal objections to licence applications can be heard by the board at the open meetings providing they are made in writing seven days prior to the date of the relevant quarterly licensing meeting. Subsequently, citizens can contact the board with any concerns.

“If people want to send in their letters after the date of the meeting the board has a right to hear objections. The public can object to any existing license at any time.”

An agenda for the meeting of Thursday 10 December was produced that listed, under item 5a, New Applications, Mr. Bernie Bush – M/V Watering Hole, Cayman Islands Yacht Club, West Bay Road. The application was for a retail liquor licence and a music and dancing licence.

There was no mention of Stingray City or any other location than Cayman Islands Yacht Club as a base or any indication that there would be a floating bar vessel as a centre of operations.

On the agenda of the meeting, an objection to the applications was listed as having been withdrawn.

Clean–up

Of the environmental impact, Mr. Bush said at the time that there would be a clean–up boat attached to the bar boat and that the new bar’s speakers were small enough to be unobtrusive to all but immediate customers.

He explained that his discussions with members of the tourism industry had been positive and that it would be a ‘product that would enhance Stingray City’s operations.’

Protest

According to Ms Kozaily, Monday’s rally is scheduled from 12pm to 2pm to ensure people can join on their lunch break and it will take the form of a silent protest. She said it will feature signs, flyers, a petition, actors portraying a drunk and a sunburnt tourist stepping on a stingray, all designed to create a ‘visually dynamic’ impact.

“This kind of protest activity is not really part of our culture, unlike for example France where they are used to protests and strikes. I hope it does become a part of [our culture] because it is a great way of standing up for ourselves and our community.

“My brother who is 10 years old and sister who’s eight will be at the rally – as young Caymanians they will be there doing their part. It’s not only adults but the next generation that care about this,” she added.

Well, I guess we aren't the only ones who think this is a ridiculous idea! Maybe it won't go through after all!

Dancing at Sting Ray City? spindance I realize that probably goes hand in hand with the liquor license, but still......... stop

Char

Personally, I don't care if someone gets drunk, acts stupid and gets hurt or bumped off; that's called Natural Selection. What bothers me is the likelihood of injury to a non-involved person, a stingray or the environment.

It is heart warming to see some local action being initiated to try and prevent this foolishness; it renews my faith in the Cayman Islands.

How can we as tourists tell the Cayman government that we aren't happy with this idea? Who /where do we voice our concerns about this? If more visitors complain maybe it will help.

The only way they will listen to us is not to use the Bar. As has been said many times before this is their Island. If the owner is not making money it will die its own death. Protest all you want this is local politics in action.

Maybe if everyone reading these posts would contact them and express their feelings it would have some impact. If you really feel strong about this, call or e-mail one of these offices. Better yet, contact ALL of them!

Music and NOW DANCING too?

What are they thinking?

Why at stingray city?

Are they expecting people from other boats to swim up, drink and dance around for a while then swiim back to the boat they came in on?

All without disturbing any of the other people there who want to relax and enjoy interacting with nature?

The whole thing sounds “fishy” to me! octopus

Used to be that way, maybe 10 years ago. I stopped going altogether a few years back, once the 100+ boats filled with cruise ship people started showing up. I might go again, but only with Sotos Cruises, they seem to find parts of the sandbar farther away from all the packs of cruise shippers, and still manage to make it a pleasant trip. But now they are going to have to find a way to avoid the bar hoppers AND the cruise shippers. Really need to check the cruise calendar first now to pick a day when there are not many or hopefully NO cruise ships there.

Ms Kozaily sums it up pretty good. Trash, noise, pollution, drunks, then the herds of cruise shippers all bobbing around stumbling all over the rays. Then someone gets stung and sues everyone in sight.

I can think of NOTHING good that could possibly come from a bar and disco floating around at stingray city.

I sent in my 2 cents, for whatever good that might do. computer2

Sounds like the sort of sneaked the whole thing past the licensing board, not telling them they were planning on going to Stingray City!

Clean up boat? Small Speakers? Unobtrusive? and the best one: ‘product that would enhance Stingray City’s operations.’
The whole thing of reeks of Mr Bush getting something under the table again, or some other political motivations, not appropriate to go into details at this forum.

All I have to say is no good will come of it, and probably a lot of problems, liability issues, general degrading of a once fun and peaceful natural habitat.
